Fish oil supplementation improves visual evoked potentials in children with phenylketonuria.

چکیده
Visual evoked potentials (VEP) were measured in 36 patients with early-treated phenylketonuria (PKU; aged 1 to 11 years) and good metabolic control before and after supplementation with omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) from fish oil. Patients with PKU had significantly longer P100 latencies than 22 age-matched control subjects. After 3 months of LC-PUFA supplementation, VEP latencies improved significantly in PKU patients but did not change in 12 untreated healthy children. The authors conclude that omega-3 LC-PUFA are essential substrates for nervous system function even beyond infancy.

Omega-3 LC-PUFA supply and neurological outcomes in children with phenylketonuria (PKU).
Children with phenylketonuria (PKU) follow a diet with very low intakes of natural protein, which is devoid of food sources of the omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). A resulting DHA depletion has been demonstrated in PKU children and may account for detectable subtle neurological deficits that are not explained by variation in plasma phenylalanine concentrations. We supplemented 36 children wi...
متن کاملVisual event-related potentials in children with phenylketonuria.
Visual event-related potentials (ERPs) were examined in 16 children (aged 5-14 y) with phenylketonuria (PKU) and 16 age- and sex-matched controls. Lifetime median measures of phenylalanine (Phe) were 230-460 micromol/l. The most recent Phe levels were 56-624 micromol/l. ERPs were recorded whilst the children performed a discrimination task. All stimuli were square wave gratings degree, which ap...
متن کاملOmega-3 Fatty Acids Modify Human Cortical Visual Processing—A Double-Blind, Crossover Study
While cardiovascular and mood benefits of dietary omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are manifest, direct neurophysiological evidence of their effects on cortical activity is still limited. Hence we chose to examine the effects of two proprietary fish oil products with different EPA:DHA ratios (EPA-rich, high EPA:DHA; DHA-rich) on mental proce...
متن کاملMaternal supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid during pregnancy does not affect early visual development in the infant: a randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND The docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake of pregnant women is lower than estimates of the DHA accretion by the fetus, and recommendations were made to increase the DHA intake of pregnant women. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine whether the supplementation of pregnant women with DHA improved the visual acuity of infants at 4 mo. DESIGN We conducted a blinded asse...
متن کاملVisual evoked potentials in phenylketonuria: association with brain MRI, dietary state, and IQ.
At separate institutions, pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded in children and older patients with phenylketonuria and compared with MRI of the brain. In nine patients aged less than 14 years, who were still on a diet low in phenylalanine, VEPs were clearly abnormal in only one and the abnormalities seen on MRI were mild. In 27 patients aged 14-31 years VEPs were abnor...
